Week 7 #1 Thunder Rose

As we begin our final story before the midterm examinations, I would like to share this week’s schedule, homework expectations, and some clarification regarding our vocabulary teaching and assessment approach.

1. Schedule and Homework

Wednesday, October 14: Experience Class outing. Regular classes will be canceled for the day. Please note that completing all assigned homework remains mandatory.

Friday, October 16: Week 7 vocabulary quiz.

Throughout the weeks before Midterms: Students will receive assigned homework related to our new tall tale, Thunder Rose, using both the My View Literacy book and the Skills Practice book.

2. My A1 Vocabulary Teaching and Assessment Approach

I would also like to address a concern that has been raised regarding my vocabulary teaching methods and explain the reasoning behind my approach.

Typically, our three-week story cycle follows this structure:

·        Week 1 – Vocabulary Foundations: Students focus on spelling, word recognition, and understanding vocabulary definitions.

·        Week 2 – Grammar and Language Skills: The quiz generally focuses on conventions and grammar from the Skills Practice book, along with the vocabulary words assigned for that week in the communication book, with skills taught in the Skills Practice book pages for that unit.

·        Week 3 – Story Comprehension and Application: Students complete a unit test that primarily assesses story comprehension and their ability to understand and use the week's vocabulary in the context of the story.

My teaching philosophy emphasizes helping students develop a deeper understanding of vocabulary and the ability to apply words in different contexts. While copying words and definitions can be useful for spelling practice and memorization, I believe students benefit even more when they learn to recognize word patterns, sound out words using phonics, understand meanings, and apply vocabulary in sentences and reading passages.

This does not mean that I discourage copying words or practicing spelling. Rather, I aim to combine these foundational skills with activities that encourage students to think critically about vocabulary and use it meaningfully. Through exposure to different question formats and learning contexts, students can develop stronger language skills beyond simply memorizing words and definitions.

I understand that these methods may differ from what some students have experienced previously, and I appreciate your understanding as we work to strengthen their English proficiency and confidence.

3. Midterm Examination Preparation

Please be assured that students will receive structured preparation before the midterm examinations. My A1 review process will include a comprehensive study guide, in-class review activities, and spelling practice to help students prepare effectively.

The detailed midterm examination scope, including specific study materials, page numbers, and directions, is currently undergoing administrative review and approval. We expect it to be available by the end of Week 7. This will also include the oral exam study content and details

Thank you for your continued support and cooperation. My goal is to help every student build a strong foundation in vocabulary, reading comprehension, grammar, and practical language use as they progress in their English learning journey.
